The foundation of 1 modern water supply

After the opening of a port, population of Yokohama that was one ghost town approximately number of houses only 100 increased day by day, and city rapidly developed. Inhabitants at the time dug well for water, but most well water included salt without being blessed with high quality water because Yokohama filled up the sea and was expanded and were not suitable for drinking water. Therefore, Governor of Kanagawa made British engineer Henry Spenser Palmer advisor and started construction of water supply in Mitsui (current Midori-ku, Sagamihara-shi Mitsui) of join of the Sagami River and the Doshi River in water source in 1885 (Meiji 18) and started water supply as Channel in first Japanese modern times in October, 1887 (Meiji 20).
Water supply business was run without law about water supply at the time of water supply start by Kanagawa. Afterwards, Yokohama-shi was born, and the water supply regulations were established as law about water supply for the first time in Japan in 1890 (Meiji 23) by the municipal organization enforcement of April, 1889 (Meiji 22). With this, the municipalities would run water supply business and they were transferred in Yokohama-shi from April of the year and came to be run as municipal management.

In 1890 (Meiji 23) when water supply business was transferred in Yokohama-shi, population of Yokohama-shi reached 120,000 (water supply a population of 90,000 people) and exceeded far original plan (water supply a population of 70,000 people), and population increased. We moved water intake point to the Doshi River in 1897 (Meiji 30) to correspond to this and we performed the first extension works from 1898 (Meiji 31) to 1901 (Meiji 34) and constructed Kawai water purification plant. Afterwards, Nishiya water purification plant was completed by the second extension works to continue in 1915 (Taisho 4) as population increased with expansion of city limits, and demand for water for industrial use increased rapidly with Russo-Japanese War. In addition, we purchased the forest of Doshi-mura, Yamanashi in 1916 (Taisho 5) and began management, maintenance as forest at the head of a river to maintain the quality of the water of the Doshi River which was water source.

It was Yokohama Channel that supported water demand to increase, but, after two times of extension works, received crushing blow by the Great Kanto Earthquake that attacked the Kanto district on September 1, 1923 (Taisho 12) in facility. We performed transportation water supply, emergency restoration soon after the earthquake disaster and we started revival construction afterwards and worked for revival after earthquake disaster. In addition, we pushed forward shift to conduct of leak of water investigation and all houses measurement system of water supply consumption to deal with increase of water supply accompanied with revival and pushed forward saving water measures.
Furthermore, by air raid accompanied with the Pacific War that began in 1941 (Showa 16), Yokohama-shi suffered serious damage again. As for the water supply population, the water supply number of houses decreased sharply to 47,000 houses from 155,000 houses from 755,000 people before war damage to 220,000 people in the end of the war and suffered big damage in government building or water supply facility.
Revival after four, response to water demand increase of the rapid economic growth period

Washing machine, private bath, flush lavatories spread rapidly, and, in addition to population growth accompanied with postwar industrial development, the standard of living improved, and water demand increased remarkably, too. We carried out the eighth extension works (1980 from 1971) from the fifth extension works (1961 from 1956) in succession to correspond to this and reinforced construction of Tsurugamine water purification plant and willow tit water purification plant and Nishiya water purification plant. Development of new water sources such as Sagami Dam or Shiroyama dam was carried out in total.

Water source and facility where it passed by full-scale operation of extension works for eight times and Miyagase dam of 2001 (Heisei 13) in the future, and there was stability water supply were set. And we make water supply facility scale accompanied with decrease of earthquake resistance that it comprised for update of now timeworn facility and large-scale earthquake after the "maintenance"-centered times, water demand for facilities which we maintained for the expansion era adequate, and importance of "update, rebuilding" has been increasing.
We maintained Kawai water purification plant with history again most in water purification plant of the largest film filtration method in the country utilizing natural energy in the city and, in 2014 (Heisei 26), abolished Tsurugamine water purification plant. In addition, we are pushing forward redevelopment of Nishiya water purification plant now.
Yokohama Channel will perform maintenance of facility including water pipe which water purification plant and about 9,200km of three city are appropriately every day from now on and we are safe 24 hours a day, every day and stably send high quality water to customer.
